A practical guide to accurate inventory counts

Build a repeatable counting process that keeps stock records useful without slowing down daily work.

Accurate inventory starts with a process your team can repeat. Define clear locations, give every item a consistent name and SKU, and decide how often each area needs to be counted.
Cycle counting is often easier than stopping operations for one large annual count. Prioritize fast-moving and high-value items, record discrepancies, and investigate patterns rather than correcting numbers without context.
Prepare each count by separating damaged, returned, reserved, and unreceived goods. A physically organized area gives counters fewer judgment calls and makes discrepancies easier to explain.
Use a second count for material differences, but avoid showing the expected quantity before the recount. An independent result is more useful than a count unconsciously adjusted to match the system.
The best inventory system makes the next action obvious. Keep ownership clear, document adjustments, and review low-stock thresholds as demand changes.
